Why only computer, it is time to connect everything to the internet

In the technical echelons of the world, a new wave is sweeping through the biggest of tech companies, engineers and professionals which is the “Internet of Things”. Just as the Internet was a path breaker some decades back, this new technological advancement, which is still in its nascent stage, promises to be “The Next Biggest Step”. Starting in the early 90’s, the Internet and the World Wide Web (www) blasted into the traditional communication media and enabled a paradigm shift in the way people connected with each other, the way marketing was done, supply chains were managed and the way businesses operated, in general.

The Internet connected all the small networks having millions of computing devices across the world. It brought together the world and its people through the computers and handheld devices.  Now, the “Internet of Things” promises to become the biggest path breaking advancement after the Internet. Just like Internet it will be a connected network but unlike Internet it will connect not only computing devices but all the “Things” as the layman would put it. It will be a network of all the smart sensing devices which will send lots of data to each other in order to cooperate among themselves.

All household  electronic items like refrigerator, fans, ACs, electronic doors etc will become smart enough to operate independently, tell if there is any maintenance required and send this data to each other to create a smart living environment. Imagine a future in which the refrigerator is able to tell if there is shortage of eggs in it and send that data to your mobile as reminder for you to buy eggs or your car becoming  smart to automatically sense any faults in it and send that data to the manufacturer/service center for them to better manage your car or imagine sensors inside soil in the farms to detect the moisture level and send that date to control the automatic irrigation pipes to provide water to the crops.

The cars running on the roads will be connected to all other cars and the city’s traffic system with each traffic light having sensors for measuring how much traffic is there, to navigate better under heavy traffic conditions. The ACs and refrigerators in the house will  communicate with the sensors at the doors of the house to get switched off when there is no one in the house and also connected with your smartphones’ GPS to get switched on minutes before you are about to reach your house. The possibilities are endless when every device that we use becomes smart and able to send data.
This smart environment will predict what we will need in advance and will make day to day tasks simpler for us.This smart connected environment will also impact industries internal production and management units and will make production of goods cheaper.
This is the essence of Internet of Things where every device will be smart and connected to better cooperate with each other and make a very smart living environment for humans. So, gear up , the future of technology is just round the corner and our phones will not be the only smart things we possess but this smartness  will be there in all the things around us.
